Love the Eco-Shed! Glave's environmental consciousness resulted in both a practical ad a beautiful environment. (Sure would like to see it in person.)

We stayed there last year as part of our trip to Canada last year, and it's as good as it looks in the photos. Very inspiring! (Book is good too - we bought it while were in Canada, but you can get it on Amazon here, I think)

Thanks for the comments.
The six foot overhang provides shading of the studio in summer. In winter, the sun is lower in the sky and shines into the space through high-thermal gain glazing, where it heats an exposed concrete floor that acts as a thermal mass. The floor is insulated underneath with R20 rigid foam to discourage heat loss to the bedrock. In summer the sun is higher overhead. We don't want the sun to cook the occupants that time of year, so the big overhang shades the glass, preventing the sun from shining inside and overheating the space.
Also, the building is not actually called "deep green" -- I called it my Eco-Shed before Shedworking came up with this category/contest. I work in there during the week and my wife and I now rent it out on weekends as a guesthouse; it includes a small bathroom (see http://www.eco-shed.ca).
You can also read all about how the shed came to be, in painful detail, throught he book I wrote about it. It's called ALMOST GREEN. More info at http://www.glave.com

There's a very large overhang on the roof is that part of the solar efficient design?
What did you use for the insulation of the roof and how much did you use?

Deep Green, very nice name, very thought provoking... This is not just the acme of 21st century shed building, but also a practical design for sustainable living t'boot. When are you moving in? Good luck with the book project, hope we get to see it over here.

Sounds great, I want one.
Honestly, I like the eco bit and the heat recovery system.
What system did you use for such a confined space?
Please send me more pictures as I'm looking to do something similar
