In Montreal, storage sheds called "hangars" were built in the earlier part of the last century adjascent to duplexes and triplexes. These structures were built of wood and used to store coal. Several years ago, the city of Montreal passed a bylaw to destroy these structures as they were seen as fire hasards and deemed unlivable, not to mention some of them are pure eyesores resembling granaries. Some homeowners have converted their hangars into finished rooms (which I intend to do), and the city also offers a nominal subsidy for homeowners to tear them down. Once demolished, the space where they once stood is usually transformed into parking spaces or a garden.
