The shed was originally conceived as a retreat for the family to escape to on a sunday night. Once a week we eat out there, we light the wood burner and get competitive over board games. We have also eaten Christmas Dinner out there but it was a little chilly hence the addition of the wood burner which transformed it completely. It has also become the meeting place for our whisky group, MENTAL. We gather periodically, put the world to rights and talk nonsense whilst tasting and scoring different whiskys. There is a definite whisky theme going on but the general feeling is that if it's a bit weird it will probably fit in. All the wood used was salvaged either from skips, pallets, laybys, and friends sheds. The idea was to keep costs down in order to justify it. Features include the old back door of the local pub, a wellington bomber landing light, my old work bench as a table and a framed photo of Daphne Du Maurier's father?!?
MENTAL stands for, 'Malt Enthusiasts North Tawton And Lager' The shed was originally the outside toilet for the house. A trip to Ireland and a special evening inspired the transformation. It is a mixture of stone, dodgy 70's block work and a galvanised roof. It still has the original cobbled floor. It only measures approximately 10x8 feet. It cost me a total of ﾣ803 (excluding the whisky) to complete and the main transformation was done over a 3 month period. It has been a further 2 years refining and adding bits until now. I have deliberately kept the exterior quite plain to enhance the element of surprise when entering.
