The Cosy Cabin

Category: Natures-Haven

More than £1000

Used year round, this garden cabin provides warmth during the cold winter months, and is the perfect backdrop for long summer nights around the barbecue or camp fire with friends and family. The cabin is a great place to wind down and continues to be a place of tranquillity amidst the current Covid19 pandemic.

The self-build took place between November 2016 and August 2017. A clay base with cement blocks and a salvaged steel frame provides strong foundations. The cabin body comprises of five (6x3 inch) timber UpRights, five (6x3 inch) timber trusses, and is sheeted with 50mm composite panel salvaged from a local car showroom. A 150mm layer of loft insulation along with salvaged wood burning stove makes for a cosy hideaway. The 16x16 ft interior features a fireplace made from recycled brick and tiles, a homemade fold-down bed for guests, as well as a mix of plastered panel and pallet wood walling for a homely feeling. The exterior comprises of purchased timber and glass, as well as a layer of salvaged sedum green roofing boosting thermal performance and producing a thriving eco-friendly habitat for wildlife. Surrounding the cabin entrance lies recycled sandstone paving and brick with a swing seat for a comfortable rest in the garden.
