We designed our shed for multiple uses, originally as a summer house with a comfortable seating area but have since added a wood burner so it can be used all year round. It has an adjoining food preparation area which will be covered this year so we can entertain our friends away from the house.
The building materials used were all recycled. The base is made from surplus concrete garage sections, the main frame is pallet wood with two walls clad with feather edge that was being thrown away by a customer. The other two walls are glass bottles set in cement these were all collected by ourselves, friends & family, & some donated by our local pub. The roof came from a carport that a builder friend was demolishing, the woodburner had previously been used in an outbuilding in our garden. The only items we have had to buy was the floor covering, some fixings, sand & cement, & some ironmongery such as hinges for the pallet wood shutters. The furniture, bench & pull out bed were made from pallets with cushions covered with recycled curtains. The whole idea was to build something from waste materials that would otherwise have been thrown away. The adjoining barbeque was built from bricks from a fire damaged house i was working on. Our Hippy Hut (the name given to it by our daughters who think their parents are hippies) has inspired some of our friends to think about incorporating some of its features into their own gardens.
