Bothy: noun (in Scotland) a small hut or cottage, especially one for housing farm labourers or for use as a mountain refuge.
The 'shed' project began during the lock-down of 2020 in order to allow me to disconnect work life from home life, it was created primarily as a home-office but soon became my Scottish high-land retreat in the heart of one of the flattest parts of the country, Cambridgeshire.
As a home office I've had some odd looks whilst on video conference calls and as a relaxing spot away from the rat-race a wee dram eases the transition from work to leisure.
I hated looking out upon an old 1970's concrete garage in my back garden, I also needed space to work and to allow a transition from my family life into work life now that commuting to London was no longer a thing.
So, early in 2020 I decided to clad the concrete garage in larch, which then led to greater things, I opened up the back, bought some glass doors, battened out in the inside, insulated it, added a side window, insulated the roof, laid a floor and put a vapour barrier throughout. I installed electrics and a log burner as well as WiFi for work.
Whilst the overall cost was just over £500 (including furniture, electrics, soft furnishings, etc.) almost all the materials except doors, cladding and insulation were reclaimed, for example the ceiling is constructed using my partner's old fence panels, the backing for the log burner an old sheet of corrugated iron salvaged from a local farm. The deer heads were picked up free from a house clearance, the furniture & curtains came mostly from Facebook Marketplace and the whiskey, well...
