This was a brilliant design and build project for three boys in Year 7 (age 11/12) and one Dad. When the Rule of Six came in last September they had the idea to build something in the garden at weekends and the boys started the design it in break times at school. We tried to use as many materials as possible from our farm shed and the boys did everything from marking out the foundations, digging the holes, painting the posts, laying the floor joists, laying the floor, building the walls, staining the timber, making the roof, stripping back the old paint from the reclaimed doors and windows and repainting. Now, it is the home of nerf gun wars,! It has the most luxurious dog bed on the farm (it is the only indoor space where dogs are allowed as they sleep outdoors in a kennel) and is the perfect space to chill out and read a book (well away from screens). Currently there is no electricity and no wifi...The boys are looking forward to when they are allowed to sleep over in it - fingers crossed - not long now!
Old carpet tiles were reused from one of our office buildings and the blind and one of the curtain fabric was donated by a friend. An old single bed has been placed in there as a day bed with spare cushions and a newly hemmed throw. It's now looking very cosy!
