We made the shed ourselves using re-used clay lump from an early 18th century barn in South Norfolk, so that it would be sound-proof for practicing the trombone at the end of our terrace house garden. Clay lump was made by mixing chopped straw and clay in moulds 18 x 9 x 6 inches. The blocks are stuck together with clay mortar, which we puddled on the floor with our feet as we worked. You can still see the straw in places and I love the idea that it was harvested in the early nineteenth century. The windows are triple glazed for sound insulation and the wood painted with wood tar tar that a friend made and linseed oil paint. The outside is lime washed and the roof is planted with sedum again for sound insulation and it is beautiful in summer. The shed is also a workshop and a great thinking space.
