The shed was initially built as a multipurpose space for the kids while they were still at home to fully enjoy it. There were signs of a budding band including our son on bass and vocals, but with nowhere for them to practise; The shed served this purpose and slowly evolved into a music studio to the point where we now record them playing. The construction involved a lot of recycling and design to fully utilise the space. The bench seating was profiled from rebar welded together and covered with roofing lath fixed with coach bolts. Under the seating is a series of looped copper piping which acts as a hidden radiator, with the remaining pipework passing round the walls for gentle heating, plus one small radiator and a small potbellied woodburner as an alternative heatsource. The table pole sits on a base made from Skoda brake discs which would have failed the MOT test, allowing removal of the table for cleaning purposes and there are curved, metal shelves and steel for the roof recycled from a derelict mushroom farm tunnel. There is a dehumidifier to prevent condensation which would damage equipment. a dartboard with software written to calculate and keep scores, a set of exercise weights on a pull bar and an inclined bench for sit-ups to keep them fit, several low voltage lights for safety, an old blind which covers the piano and doubles up as a background for projector presentations or films, a bass bin built into the wall as a space saver and room for the band's instruments using home built guitar hangers; mounts for the pc, keyboard, monitor, mixing desk and other recording equipment, most equipment being purchased from ebay.co.uk. The access features a light in the floor surrounded by chequer plate which is raised ready for a wooden floor in the future.
The band have enough original material for an album and we are busy recording them (follow utube link). Such is the popularity of the shed for the band, that I have named it NurtureNoise with plans to make the shed available online for other budding bands from an early age. Should the NurtureNoise shed win this competition, I intend to lay a wooden floor and use the prize on other ventures.
