Maddie's Summer House

  • First entered:

  • More than £500

Well, I've already built my shed (see 'Tony's Shed') and the whole family is making very good use of it. But to claim it back for myself I though my wife, Maddie, ought to have one for herself. There was a corner of the garden that was overgrown with trees and bushes which had become difficult to manage. But it receives the sun for most of the day all year round, therefore some use had to be made of it, hence, 'Maddie's Summerhouse'. She loves it, and so do the kids and their friends, and she is very much looking forward to making the most of it in the summer months.

Other info

This shed is a bespoke summerhouse, designed to fit our awkward triangular shaped back garden. With a great deal of hard work and all my spare time used, I started it in September 2014 and finished in February 2015. Clearing the land was difficult, due to established trees and bushes but most of all difficult due to having to shift five large sunken boulders.
Starting with three left-over joists, from removing the water tank in the attic, the foundation size was set. I set six level concrete pads in the ground and built it from there.
So as not to obscure the neighbours sunlight the rear height is not much greater than the adjoining fences then theres a gradual slope upwards to the front of the shed. The walls are made with 19mm tongue and groove redwood cladding while the floor and ceilings are made from plywood. All wood was stained with Ronseal preservative and then coated with Cuprinol pale jasmine paint. To maximise the sunlight in the room six double glazed units form the whole front aspect with double doors opening fully to maximise the outdoor feeling.
Were still not sure how to furnish the interior but we are open to suggestions.

Materials were from:
Travis Perkins (Carnforth):- Floor and roof joists, plywood floor and roof, roof felt, redwood cladding
Wickes (Morecambe):- Redwood posts, softwood stud posts, planed wood, screws and nails, sealants
Screwfix (Morecambe):- Joist hangers, hinges, lock, electrics
West Coast Glass (Morecambe):- double glazed units and fittings
Homebase (Morecambe):- Cuprinol pale jasmine paint, Ronseal wood preserve
City Deco Centre (London):- Handles
