The Invention Shed is a mini scrap store and workshop space on a primary school site. Its purpose is to inspire children to explore materials and engineer their own ideas. It represents a new approach to education:- learning by doing and draws on the North Easts rich heritage of invention and making stuff. The beautiful shed stocked with inspiring materials and exciting tools never fails to engage all children in creative exploration. In this way the Invention Shed addresses the skills gap in education.
This idea and project is the brain child of Emma Pace, Director of House of Objects Community Interest Company. Since the development of the first invention shed many schools have expressed an interest in having one of their own. At a time when education is in crisis this project could represent a new approach and way forward. The shed is reguarly stocked with reclaimed waste materials to inspire childre's ideas. Teachers attend training in using recycled materials and developing making skills and projects. The shed experiences are linked to the curriculum to bring learning and subjects to life. The Invention Shed encourages recycling and environmental responsibility. The Invention Shed aims to combat the throw away culture, divert waste from landfill and nurture creativity.
To change the perception of children as recievers and value them as innovative independant thinkers
