My wife and daughter both have physical disabilities and both love crafting. Our house didn't have a space that could be devoted to crafts; we were constantly having to clear away so we could eat at the table etc. I took early retirement from teaching to look after them both and decided to build a space that could be theirs so they could craft to their heart's content and not have to constantly tidy away. I've never been afraid of a bit of DIY so I researched different possible constructions styles and took the plunge. Since my daughter, Ella is a wheelchair user I also had to build a slope down to the garden room so she could access it. I also wanted to make the construction as maintenance free as possible so decided on rubber roofing, concrete based plank cladding (cedral) and composite decking.
Where possible I used recycled material. All the windows were second hand from a conservatory that was being dismantled locally (although I did have to buy a door). I also managed to get a lot of insulation from a local company that was building an extension which would otherwise have gone to landfill. I had enough 100mm insulation board to do the roof and under the floor. Skip surfing insulation accounted for one wall so I only had to buy insulation for 3 walls. I sourced 6 chairs and a chest of drawers left outside houses on the pavement and by asking people who had skips and an ancient set of tuck lockers from my school helped to furnish the inside. We also bought upcycled furniture locally.
