We built the Cornered Rat just after lockdown with the idea that it was to be a Tiki style cafe/bar that we could take my mother in law to when her Dementia got so bad that she couldn't go out to a regular cafe anymore, which was one of the things that still enjoyed doing. We thought that if she couldn't get out to a cafe then we would bring the cafe to her and it be a safe space.
When it came to naming the Bar we decided that it should be after my father in law who sadly died in hospital during lockdown but who when he was alive was always managing to get himself into scrapes that he always miraculously managed to escape from ( a typical yorkshireman) hence The Cornered Rat.
Although they have both left us now and we miss them dearly it's nice to sit in the bar, reflect on their lives and the impact they had on us and raise a glass to them on their birthdays.
As with any Tiki bar The Cornered Rat is an ongoing build and we love finding and collecting new items to put in it and planning new ideas for where we want the build to go.
