Early every morning I sit and enjoy a strong coffee and the sun (when it’s out) shine on this east facing corner of our suburban back garden. With the sound of cats (our own and a neighbour’s) on the roof and Heathrow bound long-haul flights above, I do a few minutes of Spanish via an app without its sound effects disturbing my wife. It was just a storage shed until a spring clean that became a revamp and reorganisation. New features include a fold down desk made from scrap wood. A folding chair found in the street and repaired. Outside I added a Japanese-style rain chain to existing gutter inspired by a trip to Kyoto. Everything that was stored in the small shed, which is 12 years old, is still kept there only neatly. This includes my bike, two deckchairs, a Flymo, garden and DIY tools. A portable BBQ doubles as a workbench thanks to a removable worktop made of a scrap of plywood. A Mexican mirror that was in the loft now adds a touch of dunroamin’ along with postcards and other souvenirs.
Writing hut is a stretch but I was partly inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s she’d slash writing room in Hertfordshire. I plan to stain the interior a light green as an homage to what was intended to be a garden shed bought by Shaw’s wife. To keep my wife from losing patience with my “grand redesign” and ongoing tinkering, I have avoided changing the external appearance of the shed apart from adding the rain chain.
