Shed Features

Our shed is more than just a chicken house - it is a peaceful retirement retreat created especially for our rescue hens, including our beloved 9-year-old, Broody, who deserves the very best in her golden years. Every detail has been designed around their happiness, comfort and wellbeing. Inside, they have a dedicated enrichment area with a sand pit, complete with a recycled tyre for digging, scratching and perching, as well as a mirror for curious hens who enjoy admiring their reflections! It also features a beautiful window-level viewing shelf, giving our hens the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by.

At the heart of this shelf is a Maldives-inspired mesh relaxation hammock - a little luxury hideaway where they can lounge, rest and enjoy the sunshine. The shed houses a spacious coop suitable for up to nine chickens, alongside two electric fans to keep them comfortable during warmer weather. Even better, the entire shed is powered by solar energy, making it a sustainable little haven that works in harmony with nature.

We have installed a dedicated high-level shelf for accessories and medical care, because rescue animals often need a little extra attention. The hygienic vinyl flooring, specialist edging and easy-clean design allow us to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our girls. The fawn-coloured finish gives the shed a warm, natural feel, while windows on three sides flood the space with natural light and allow our hens to enjoy views of the garden around them.

To ensure they remain comfortable throughout the changing seasons, the windows are fitted with specially designed blinds, allowing us to control the amount of sunlight, warmth and privacy inside the shed whenever needed. A beautiful stone border surrounding the base acts as a natural drainage system, helping to prevent flooding, while guttering collects rain into a water butt so we can reuse it to nourish the surrounding fruit trees and plants. Our custom-built chicken access door is seamlessly integrated into the main shed door, allowing our hens to safely come and go throughout the day while keeping their sanctuary secure.

The hinged design can be closed and locked at night, providing extra protection and peace of mind while giving our girls the freedom and independence they enjoy. This shed represents everything our rescue hens deserve: comfort, freedom, enrichment and a place where they can truly feel at home. It is a little sanctuary built with love - a reminder that every animal, no matter their age or past, deserves a second chance at a wonderful life.
