The Melon Shed is built from old windows and scavenged wood, it is somewhere between a potting shed, a greenhouse and a cold frame.
The idea of growing melons in Camberwell seemed mad enough to build a shed so we did. The shed is in an abandoned car park round the back of our co-living community. The building used to be an old people’s home, now it is home to over 50 young professionals, artists and key workers.
We share kitchens showers and the garden. The shed and two planters, as well as steps to climb over a fence were all built to increase vegetable growing space.
The planters are made of doors screwed together, the steps lead to a platform where people can read in the sun. The shed has a small planter built in where we grew out first melon in 2023, since then we have also grown cucumbers, tomatoes and chilies. The melon shed is three years old this spring.
I run a project called the “Folly Building Workshop” this initiative is a community focused, upcycling art project where people design and build useless structures with upcycled or discarded material.
The shed was made from some of the left material and is used regularly by the house for growing seeds.
